A City of Invincible Hills
Ajmer was founded as Ajaya Meru — "invincible hill" in Sanskrit — by a Chahamana ruler, and takes its name from the Taragarh Hill on which it sits. It served as the capital of the Chahamana dynasty until the 12th century.
In 1193 the city passed to the Ghurids, and in 1556 it came under the Mughal Empire when Emperor Akbar made it the seat of the Ajmer Subah. The Mughals endowed the city with landmarks such as Akbar's palace and the pavilions along Ana Sagar.
Today Ajmer — the Heart of Rajasthan — is a heritage city celebrated for the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, the Aravalli-fringed Ana Sagar lake, and monuments that bridge Rajput, Mughal and Jain traditions.
